The Manger Tours – Experience the Nativity of Jesus First-Hand This Christmas

By taking a Manger Tour at Biblical History Center this holiday season, you’ll be fully immersed in the nativity of Jesus while gaining a deeper understanding of the events that occurred and what life was like for those present on the night of His birth. This year, don’t just listen to the Christmas story being told—experience it!

You’ve probably heard the narrative of the first Christmas countless times, but have you ever desired to explore details and historical elements beyond the basic storyline? How would the stable that Mary and Joseph occupied upon finding no vacancy in the inn have really looked? How would Jesus’ birth have actually taken place? What type of interaction would have occurred when the Three Wise Men arrived to present gifts? What would the shepherds in the nearby fields have been doing when they saw the shining star while keeping watch over their flocks?

Learning the answers to these questions and others like them can yield a more intimate understanding of an already magnificent Christmas story—and Biblical History Center in LaGrange offers the perfect way to make this a reality. Every Tuesday through Saturday until December 23rd, Biblical History Center is featuring a production called the Manger Tours, which hones in on the history and archeology of the first Christmas through access to full-scale reconstructions of structures relevant to the time and story, genuine artifacts from the era and region and insight that extends well beyond surface-level storytelling.

Ultimately, the Manger Tours will illuminate facts and elements surrounding Jesus’ nativity that often get lost or taken for granted in the telling of His birth, fully immersing you in the Christmas story from the perspective of those who were present.

What to Expect During the Manger Tours

The Manger Tours are led by knowledgeable guides dressed in clothing of the time who will chronicle the entire Christmas story—not simply rehashing the plot you’re likely familiar with, but going into great detail on numerous historical and archaeological elements that paint a more comprehensive picture of what transpired on the night of Jesus’ birth as well as better define the meaning and significance of the events that occurred.

Full-Size Replicas to Transport You to Christmas in Bethlehem

The first hour of the Manger Tours is spent in Biblical History Center’s Archaeological Replica Garden, which features life-size recreations of structures that were worked in, lived in, shopped in, and even used for entertainment in the time Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Here your guide will focus on the Christmas story, describing everything from Mary’s and Joseph’s arrival to Jesus’ birth to what transpired throughout the post-partum hours. In this special exhibit, you’ll also get a great understanding of what life was like for shepherds, farmers and regular villagers back in the day.

Rare Artifacts That Offer a Look Into Days of Yore

The last half-hour of the Manger Tours includes access to Biblical History Center’s acclaimed Biblical Life Artifacts Gallery that currently hosts over 250 artifacts on long-term loan from the Israel Antiquities Authority. Among this prestigious stock of rare antiquities—which is one of only eight such collections worldwide—are various pottery items, tools, coins, farming equipment, oil lamps and more, all of which further help to showcase what life was really like for people before, during and even after Jesus’ birth.

Biblical Bites to Refuel Your Body and Brain*

After walking around the exhibits and soaking up new knowledge on your tour, you’re likely to have worked up an appetite. Fortunately, Biblical History Center offers the option to pair your Manger Tour with a special Biblical Meal Experience consisting of a Mediterranean- and Middle Eastern-style four-course meal that features 15 different dishes the people of Jesus’ time would’ve regularly consumed. This one-hour add-on—which needs to be purchased when you make your Manger Tour reservation—actually focuses on Passover and the Last Supper as opposed to the Christmas story, but it offers yet another excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in a true biblical experience.

*The Biblical Meal Experience is not included in the standard Manger Tour. If interested, you’ll need to specify you want to add the Biblical Meal Experience when making your reservation for the Manger Tour.
